1599‐1678 A French woman of letters. From a young age, she was highly regarded as a brilliant woman at the salon of Madame de Rambouillet, and influenced the brilliant female feminists known as Précieuse. In later years, she held her own salon, where people of Jansenist descent gathered to discuss thought and literature. It was at this salon that it became popular to write short, sharp, truth-getting maxims, and Madame de Sablé herself printed her own "Aphorisms" (1678). It is particularly noteworthy that La Rochefoucauld's famous "Proverbs" was born from discussions at this salon. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
