In 1596, he set sail from Lisbon for India, but was captured by a British ship. In 1599, he left Lisbon again, and traveled via Mozambique, Goa, Malacca, and Macau, arriving in Nagasaki in 1602 (Keicho 7). When the ban on Christianity was issued in 1616, he took the alias "Giuseppe of the Cross" and hid in Nagasaki, where he continued his missionary work. In 1618, he was captured in Nagasaki and imprisoned in Suzuta Prison in Omura. The cell was made of thick timber like a bamboo birdcage, and he spent four years in the open cell without a bath or a haircut, suffering from fever. In 1619, he was one of 55 (or 57) people martyred by burning and beheading at the stake at Nishizaka in Nagasaki (the Great Genna Martyrdom).
