Since ancient times, three reasons have been given for the blockage of veins: blood becomes more likely to clot, blood flow in the veins slows, and changes occur in the vein walls. There are two types of veins: cutaneous veins, which are located in shallow areas such as subcutaneous tissue, and deep veins, which are located deep between muscles, and even if a vein becomes blocked in the same way, the symptoms are completely different for each type. For example, in the lower limbs, the deep veins are responsible for 80% of the venous blood transport and the cutaneous veins for 20%, so when a deep vein is blocked, significant congestion occurs in the peripheral area, accompanied by swelling in the lower limbs and the skin turning reddish purple, but with cutaneous veins, no congestion symptoms are seen and the blocked area hardens, becomes red, swollen, and painful.
