A high-ranking official in the Western Roman government around 412. He was from the Black Sea region and obtained a position at the imperial court through Stilicho during the reign of Emperor Honorius. He took advantage of the discord between Honorius and Stilicho to promote anti-Silicho and anti-Germanic sentiment among the army, which led to Stilicho's execution (August 408). He later wielded power in the Western Roman government for a time as chief scribe (magister officiorum), but was overthrown after failure to negotiate with the Visigoths under King Alaric. He fled to Dalmatia, but was executed around 412 by order of General Constantius, who had a great respect for Stilicho. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
