Olympius

Japanese: オリュンピウス（英語表記）Olympius

A high-ranking official in the Western Roman government around 412. He was from the Black Sea region and obtained a position at the imperial court through Stilicho during the reign of Emperor Honorius. He took advantage of the discord between Honorius and Stilicho to promote anti-Silicho and anti-Germanic sentiment among the army, which led to Stilicho's execution (August 408). He later wielded power in the Western Roman government for a time as chief scribe (magister officiorum), but was overthrown after failure to negotiate with the Visigoths under King Alaric. He fled to Dalmatia, but was executed around 412 by order of General Constantius, who had a great respect for Stilicho.

西ローマ政府の高官。黒海地方出身で，ホノリウス帝治下にスティリコを介して宮廷官職を得る。同帝とスティリコの間に生じた不和を利して，軍隊の間に反スティリコ･反ゲルマン気運を高め，スティリコ処刑に至らしめた(408年8月)。その後，書記官長(マギステル･オフィキオルム)として一時西ローマ政府で勢力を振るったが，アラリック王麾下の西ゴートとの交渉における不首尾により失脚。ダルマティアに逃れていたが，412年ころ，スティリコを尊敬していた将軍コンスタンティウスの命で処刑された。
