Italian critic. Born in Florence. Based on the magazine Ronda (1919-23), which he founded with Caldarelli, Bacchelli and others, he developed a new trend in criticism that broke away from Croce's framework, and contributed book reviews and essays to the literary columns of various Italian newspapers for a long time. He was an expert in short prose that aimed for refinement and clarity of form using elaborate techniques, and produced a wealth of results that became a typical example of modern Italian prose criticism. He was a pioneer in the study and translation of not only contemporary Italian literature, but also English and American literature, and left behind many excellent works in a wide range of genres, including art criticism and travelogues to various countries. His theories on authors and works are currently collected in the large volume Italian Literature of the 1900s (1972). Another notable achievement is the nine-volume Garzanti edition of "History of Italian Literature" (1965-69), which he edited together with N. Sapegno. Incidentally, Suso Cecchi D'Amico, one of Italy's leading screenwriters after the Second World War, is his daughter.
