…British composer. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music and the Leipzig Conservatory, and became a professor at the Royal Academy of Music in 1866, and director of the National School of Music from 1876 to 1881. Since collaborating with librettist WS Gilbert to produce the opera Sespis in 1871, he produced many of the so-called Gilbert and Sullivan operas, including Pinafore (1878), The Mikado (1885), and The Gondoliers (1889). These are considered some of the most representative operas in 19th-century Britain. …
