Spinodal decomposition

One of the two-phase separation processes in a two-component mixture. Considering the curve (a in the figure) of the free energy G and composition C of a two-component mixture with a positive enthalpy of mixing at a certain temperature T ₀ , the two phases are stable against fluctuations at , but are unstable at . Therefore, the points on the G - C curve, i.e., the inflection points, are found and plotted on the two-phase separation curve (b in the figure). The locus of inflection points obtained by changing T ₀ in a similar manner is called the spinodal curve (named by van der Waals).

2成分混合系における2相分離過程の一つ。ある温度T₀における混合エンタルピーが正である2成分混合系の自由エネルギーGと組成Cの曲線(図のa)を考えた場合，では2相はゆらぎに対し安定であるが，では不安定である。そこで，G‐C曲線上での点，すなわち変曲点を求め，これを2相分離曲線(図のb)にプロットし，同様な操作でT₀を変化させて得られる変曲点の軌跡をスピノダル曲線(ファン･デル･ワールスの命名)という。
