It is a bird hunting dog breed that originated in England, America, Germany, France, the Netherlands, etc. There are more than a dozen breeds of spaniels, including the English cocker, American cocker, springer, water, clumber, etc., and in Japan, what is usually called a spaniel is the cocker spaniel, which originated in England and America. The English cocker spaniel is the oldest of the spaniel family, a small breed that was bred in England in the 1300s based on Spanish hunting dogs.

鳥猟犬種で，原産地はイギリス，アメリカ，ドイツ，フランス，オランダなど。スパニエル種には，イングリッシュ･コッカーEnglish cocker，アメリカン･コッカーAmerican cockerをはじめ，スプリンガーspringer，ウォーターwater，クランバーclumberなど十数犬種があり，日本で通常スパニエルと呼んでいるのはイギリス，アメリカ両国原産のコッカー･スパニエル種である。イングリッシュ･コッカー･スパニエルはスパニエル族のうちでは最も古く，1300年代にスペインの猟犬を基礎としてイギリスで育種改良された小型種である。
