An evergreen tall tree of the Mulberry family. Native to India and Malay, it is a close relative of the breadfruit of the same genus. It grows to a height of 9-15m, with long, elliptical leaves without sawtooth and pointed tips. Dioecious. When the trunk is injured, a milky juice comes out. The female inflorescence is a trunk flower that grows directly on the trunk. The fruit is 30-80cm long, has granular protrusions all over the skin, and turns black-brown when ripe. Like the breadfruit, the young fruit can be eaten raw, salted, or dried for storage. The seeds are starchy and edible.
