...Central banks accept current account deposits from commercial financial institutions as reserves for payments, and use these current account deposits to settle transactions between commercial financial institutions, such as bill clearing and call money transactions. In addition, if a commercial financial institution runs short of funds, the central bank will provide the necessary funds as the "lender of last resort." Note that central banks do not normally enter into any transactions, such as deposits or loans, with ordinary companies or individuals, which is what distinguishes them from commercial financial institutions, including ordinary banks.
