Dutch navigator. In 1616, he discovered a sea route to the Pacific Ocean, bypassing Cape Horn, the southernmost point of South America. At the time, the right of passage through the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa and the Strait of Magellan at the southern tip of South America was held by the Dutch East India Company, and other Dutch people were not free to pass through. In order to enter the Pacific trade, Amsterdam merchant Isaac Le Maire set out from the Netherlands in 1615 to discover a third sea route to the Pacific Ocean, with Schouten, a famous navigator, as captain and his son Jacob as the captain.

オランダの航海者。1616年南アメリカ最南端のホーン岬を迂回して太平洋に至る航路を発見した。当時アフリカ南端の喜望峰と南アメリカ南端のマゼラン海峡の通行権はオランダ東インド会社が握っており，他のオランダ人には通過の自由がなかった。太平洋貿易参入をめざすアムステルダムの商人イサーク･ル･メールは，太平洋への第3の航路発見のため，名高い航海者であったスハウテンを船長とし，自分の息子ヤコブを隊長とする探検隊を1615年にオランダから出発させた。
