?-1625 Dutch navigator. In 1616, he discovered a sea route to the Pacific Ocean, bypassing Cape Horn, the southernmost point of South America. At the time, the right of passage through the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa and the Strait of Magellan at the southern tip of South America was held by the Dutch East India Company, and other Dutch people were not free to pass through. In order to enter the Pacific trade, Amsterdam merchant Isaac Le Maire set out from the Netherlands in 1615 to discover a third sea route to the Pacific Ocean, with Schouten, a famous navigator, as captain and his son Jacob as the captain.
