The meaning of "ready-made" comes from the fact that M. Duchamp, during the Dada era, called mass-produced objects that were simply signed "ready-made objects." Dada and Surrealist objects are a clear and concrete expression of the consciousness of objects that emerged in 20th century art from Cezanne through Cubism, and the Surrealists in particular tried to see objects as symbols of the subconscious. Duchamp's toilet, entitled "Fountain," is a typical example of a ready-made object, and while it is true that it contains sexual allusions, the artist himself wrote the following:

〈既製品〉の意味だが，ダダ時代のM.デュシャンが，一連の量産品に署名しただけのオブジェを〈レディ･メードのオブジェ〉と呼んだことに由来する。ダダやシュルレアリスムのオブジェは，セザンヌからキュビスムをへて20世紀美術に台頭した物体への意識がはっきりと即物的な面であらわれたもので，とくにシュルレアリストたちは，意識下の領域の象徴としてオブジェをとらえようとした。デュシャンの《泉》と題された便器が，レディ･メードの典型だが，ここに性的暗喩がこめられているのは事実としても，作家自身はこう書いている。
