Rapid industrialization and urbanization since the second half of the 19th century have led to depopulation and devastation of rural areas, but on the other hand, a movement to preserve local cultural heritage has arisen, and the Nordic Museum (Nordiska Museet) (1880) and the open-air museum Skansen (1891) were founded.
