Johor Bahru (English spelling)

Japanese: ジョホール・バール(英語表記)Johor Baharu
Johor Bahru (English spelling)
Located at the southernmost tip of the Malay Peninsula, Johor is the fourth largest city in Malaysia. It is the capital of Johor state and is also spelled Johor Bahru. With a population of 328,000 (1991), half are Malays, making Johor Bahru a low percentage of Chinese residents (about 40%) for a city in the country. It is connected to Singapore on the opposite bank of the Johor Strait by a causeway. It has strong economic ties with Singapore and is a commercial and industrial center with a rapidly growing population. However, in order to avoid excessive economic dependence on its neighboring country, the Malaysian government has built a new airport and trading port on the outskirts of the city, and is making the city a major industrial development base for the country.
