A film term. Originally meaning "superimposed on top of one another," it was a photographic term referring to the burning of two images onto one another, but today it generally refers to the burning of translations of dialogue into the screen of foreign films. Abbreviated as "super." The first foreign film in Japan to have Japanese superimposed text was Morocco (1931). There are two types of superimposed titles: superimposed titles, in which text is photographically burned into the film in white, and impress titles, in which only the text is punched out white on the film's surface. Dubbing the dialogue into Japanese is also called dubbing, etc., rather than subtitling. [Koichi Hino] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
