An area inhabited by the Etruscans, who are said to have originated from Lydia in Asia Minor or to have been indigenous to the region. Located in the northern part of central Italy facing the Tyrrhenian Sea, it is a general term for the area bounded by the Arno River in the north, the Tiber River in the south, and the Apennine Mountains in the east. It corresponds to the area excluding the northern part of present-day Tuscany, and includes parts of Lazio and Umbria. The Romans called it Tuscia (from which Tuscany comes), and the Greeks called it Tyrrhenia (from which the Tyrrhenian Sea comes). It flourished from the 7th to 6th centuries BC and had a great influence on Rome, but declined after the 5th century BC and later became a Roman territory.
