A pioneer of Zionism in Germany. A Talmudic scholar in East Prussia, he preached that people should not wait for the appearance of a savior like orthodox Jews, but should return to Zion and emigrate to Palestine through their own efforts. His In Search of Zion (1862), along with M. Hess' Rome and Jerusalem, published in the same year, marked the establishment of the Zionist movement. [Yuichi Shimomura]

ドイツにおけるシオニズムの先駆者。東プロイセンのタルムード学者であったが，正統ユダヤ教徒のようにひたすら救世主の出現を待つのではなく，自分たちの努力によりシオンへの帰還，パレスティナへの移住を実現すべきであると説いた。彼の《シオンを求めて》(1862)は同じ年に出たM.ヘスの《ローマとエルサレム》とともにシオニズム運動の成立を画した。【下村由一】
