1795‐1874 A pioneer of Zionism in Germany. A Talmudic scholar in East Prussia, he preached that people should not wait for the appearance of a savior like orthodox Jews, but should return to Zion and emigrate to Palestine through their own efforts. His In Search of Zion (1862), along with M. Hess' Rome and Jerusalem, published in the same year, marked the establishment of the Zionist movement.
