…The city that was the foundation of the Assyrian Empire and served as its capital from the late 14th century BC to 883 BC. Its modern name is Qal'a Shirqa, derived from the name of its chief god Ashur. It is located 110 km south of Mosul in northern Iraq, on the west bank of the Tigris River.
