Toshiki Imai - Imai Toshiki

Historian. Born in Suwa, Nagano Prefecture. Graduated from the Faculty of Letters of Tokyo Imperial University in 1911 (Meiji 44). Became a lecturer at the same university in 1921 (Taisho 10), and after serving as an assistant professor, he became a professor in 1930 (Showa 5). He served as dean of the Faculty of Letters from 1939 to 1944 under Fascism. His liberal academic style and personality earned him the respect of students, and he made a great contribution to raising the standard of Western history studies in Japan. Although he did not publish any books during his tenure, the main lectures he gave over his 26 years were compiled and published by his students. His works "Western Political History," "British Social History," "Shift of the Center of Prosperity in the Early Modern Period," and "Studies in the History of Urban Development" convey his academic style, which placed more importance on social and cultural history than on traditional political history, and "Methods of Historical Research" clarifies his methodology, which values ​​synthesis.

歴史学者。長野県諏訪(すわ)に生まれる。1911年（明治44）東京帝国大学文学部を卒業。21年（大正10）同大学文学部講師となり、助教授を経て30年（昭和5）教授となり、ファシズム下の39～44年には文学部長を務めた。リベラルな学風と人柄で学生の敬愛を集め、日本における西洋史学の水準の向上に大きな貢献をした。在職中は著書を出さなかったが、26年間の講義の主要なものは門下生によってまとめられて刊行された。『西洋政治史』『英国社会史』『近世における繁栄中心の移動』『都市発達史研究』は、従来の政治史よりも、社会史、文化史を重視するその学風を伝え、また『歴史学研究法』は総合を尊ぶその方法論を明らかにしている。
