A town in North Pyongan Province, North Korea. It is the seat of Unsan County. It is known as a gold producing area, and the gold mine is located in Bukjin, upstream of the Guryong River, 19 km northwest of the town. The geology is Precambrian gneiss and porphyritic granite, and the deposit is a deep hydrothermal vein in the granitic rocks. Native gold is accompanied by pyrite. It is the largest gold mine in Korea, with a vein reaching 2,500 meters, and mining is carried out at three places: Gyodong Pit, Daeam Pit, and Jinho Pit. Unsan Gold Mine is an old gold mine that was first mined in 1895 by American Morse, who obtained mining rights from the Yi Dynasty government, and mining continues to this day.
