Originally, the term meant a neon or xenon filled flashlight used to measure the rotation speed of a high speed rotating object, a so-called stroboscopic light, and a more specific application of this is the stroboscope. Currently, it often refers to a device that incorporates a xenon flashlight, capacitor, and charger for photography (see figure). The correct term is electronic flashlight. 本来は高速度回転体の回転数を計測するために用いるネオンまたはキセノンを封入したせん光放電灯,いわゆるストロボスコピックライトstoroboscopic lightを意味し,これを応用したものがストロボスコープである。現在は写真撮影用のキセノンせん光放電灯とコンデンサー,充電器を内蔵したものを指すことが多い(図)。正しくはエレクトロニクフラッシュライトelectronic flashlightという。
