1852‐1913 Czech painter. Born in Mirotice, South Bohemia. In 1869, he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, but was influenced by Josef Mánes and began to create large-scale paintings inspired by patriotism, using Czech mythology and history as the subject matter. In 1879, he worked on the interior decoration of the National Theater in Prague. His dramatic and dreamlike style continued in his later years, when he devoted himself to illustrations for Slavic legends and folk song collections.
