1852‐1913
Czech painter. Born in Mirotice, South Bohemia. In 1869, he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, but was influenced by Josef Mánes and began to create large-scale paintings inspired by patriotism, using Czech mythology and history as the subject matter. In 1879, he worked on the interior decoration of the National Theater in Prague. His dramatic and dreamlike style continued in his later years, when he devoted himself to illustrations for Slavic legends and folk song collections. [Takagi Michitaka]

チェコの画家。南ボヘミアのミロティツェMirotice生れ。1869年プラハ美術アカデミーに入学するが，マネスJosef Mánesの影響を受け，チェコ民族の神話と歴史を題材に愛国心に動機づけられた大画面の制作をはじめる。79年プラハ国立劇場の内部装飾に従事。劇的かつ夢幻的な作風は，後年力をそそいだスラブ民族の伝説や民謡集の挿絵にまで継続して見られる。【鐸木道剛】
