Republic of Kalmykia (English spelling)
A republic in the western part of the Russian Federation. It was formerly the Kalmyk Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (Kalmytskaya ASSR) during the Soviet era and declared sovereignty as a republic in 1990. It is located on the west bank of the lower Volga River, northwest of the Caspian Sea. It has an area of ​​75,900 km2 and a population of 322,600 (1989). Its capital is Elista. The ethnic composition is 45.4% Kalmyks, 37.7% Russians, and 16.9% others (Dargins, Chechens, Kazakhs, Ukrainians, Tatars, etc.) (1989).
