[Athabasca Tar Sands]
The lower Athabasca River basin is home to a geological formation known as the oil sands (or tar sands). The deposits are dark brown, viscous sand layers (average thickness of 50+ meters) that contain heavy hydrocarbon oil (bitumen), and are found at depths of 0-300 meters and over an area of ​​25,000 km2.
