A river that flows south from Bulgaria to Greece. It is called the Strymón in Greek and the Kara in Turkish. It originates in the Vitosha Mountains near Sofia, flows south through western Bulgaria, enters Greek territory, and empties into the Strymon Gulf in the Aegean Sea. Grapes and tobacco are cultivated in the river basin, and cities such as Kyustendir and Blagoevgrad are located on its banks. The area that entered Greek territory was swampy, but irrigation and drainage have progressed, and it has become one of the agricultural centers of Greece.
