Norwegian mathematician and physical chemist. Born in Christiania (now Oslo). In 1869 he became a professor of applied mathematics at Christiania University. In 1864 he conducted research on chemical affinities with his brother-in-law Bøge and discovered the law of mass action for reaction rates. His thermodynamic research on molecular theory and chemical equilibrium was a precursor to van't Hoff's theory of dilute solutions. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
