Fukumoto Nichinan - Fukumoto Nichinan

A newspaper reporter and historical commentator in the Meiji and Taisho periods. His real name was Makoto. His pen names included Kenjitsubetsu and Seiten. He was born on June 14, 1858, in Chikuzen Province (Fukuoka Prefecture). He studied Buddhist scriptures at Koyo Gijuku (the predecessor to the Genyosha). He entered the Ministry of Justice Law School, but was expelled after being involved in a boarding school bribery scandal with Riku Katsunan and others. In 1888 (Meiji 21), he joined Tokyo Telegraph, which was founded by Katsunan. He later became an editor at Nippon, a paper that was restructured from the Tokyo Telegraph. He also contributed extensively to the sister publication Nihonjin. Since 1889, he has visited the Philippines and Southeast Asia several times. Based on this experience, he advocated the idea of ​​advancing southward, and founded the Toho Kyokai (Eastern Japan Association). In 1905 (Meiji 38), he became president and editor-in-chief of the Kyushu Nippo. He promoted internal reforms. In 1908, he was elected to the House of Representatives. In 1909, he left the Kyushu Nippo newspaper, and thereafter devoted himself mainly to writing and political activities. He was particularly skilled in historical theory, and his book Genroku Kaikyoroku became a bestseller. He also wrote many other historical essays, including Puritan Shinpuren. He also participated in various movements as a hardliner on foreign policy. He passed away on September 2, 1921.

明治・大正期の新聞記者、史論家。本名誠。別号は健日別、青天など。安政(あんせい)4年6月14日筑前国(ちくぜんのくに)(福岡県)生まれ。幼少より向陽義塾(玄洋社の前身)で経書を学ぶ。司法省法学校に入学したが、陸羯南(くがかつなん)らと寄宿舎の賄征伐事件(まかないせいばつじけん)を起こしたため退校処分を受ける。1888年(明治21)羯南が創刊した『東京電報』に入社。以後、同紙を改組した『日本』の編集幹部として活躍。姉妹誌である『日本人』にも多く寄稿した。1889年以来数回にわたりフィリピン、東南アジアを視察。この経験をもとに南進論を主張し、東邦協会を設立した。1905年(明治38)『九州日報』の社長兼主筆に就任。社内改革を推進した。1908年衆議院議員に当選。1909年『九州日報』を退社、以後はおもに文筆活動と政治活動にあたる。とくに歴史論に優れ、『元禄快挙録(げんろくかいきょろく)』はベストセラーとなった。このほか『清教徒神風連(しんぷうれん)』など多くの史論がある。また対外硬派としてさまざまな運動に参加した。大正10年9月2日死去。
