A newspaper reporter and historical commentator in the Meiji and Taisho periods. His real name was Makoto. His pen names included Kenjitsubetsu and Seiten. He was born on June 14, 1858, in Chikuzen Province (Fukuoka Prefecture). He studied Buddhist scriptures at Koyo Gijuku (the predecessor to the Genyosha). He entered the Ministry of Justice Law School, but was expelled after being involved in a boarding school bribery scandal with Riku Katsunan and others. In 1888 (Meiji 21), he joined Tokyo Telegraph, which was founded by Katsunan. He later became an editor at Nippon, a paper that was restructured from the Tokyo Telegraph. He also contributed extensively to the sister publication Nihonjin. Since 1889, he has visited the Philippines and Southeast Asia several times. Based on this experience, he advocated the idea of advancing southward, and founded the Toho Kyokai (Eastern Japan Association). In 1905 (Meiji 38), he became president and editor-in-chief of the Kyushu Nippo. He promoted internal reforms. In 1908, he was elected to the House of Representatives. In 1909, he left the Kyushu Nippo newspaper, and thereafter devoted himself mainly to writing and political activities. He was particularly skilled in historical theory, and his book Genroku Kaikyoroku became a bestseller. He also wrote many other historical essays, including Puritan Shinpuren. He also participated in various movements as a hardliner on foreign policy. He passed away on September 2, 1921.
