A reciprocating mechanism that moves slowly on the way out and quickly on the way back. For example, a biased piston-crank mechanism, in which the crank rotation angle is different for the piston's outward and return movements, can produce a rapid return motion of the piston from the constant speed of the crank rotation. It is used in cases such as on a shaping machine to increase the efficiency of machining by speeding up the return movement, in which the tool is lifted, compared to the outward movement, in which cutting work is done.

往路はゆっくり動き，復路は早く動く往復運動機構。たとえば，ピストンの往路と復路とで，対応するクランクの回転角が異なるようにした，かたよりピストンクランク機構は，クランクの等速回転からピストンの早戻り運動を取り出せる。形削り盤などで切削の仕事をする往路に対し，刃物を持ち上げて戻る復路を速くして，工作能率を上げる場合などに利用。
