A reciprocating mechanism that moves slowly on the way out and quickly on the way back. For example, a biased piston-crank mechanism, in which the crank rotation angle is different for the piston's outward and return movements, can produce a rapid return motion of the piston from the constant speed of the crank rotation. It is used in cases such as on a shaping machine to increase the efficiency of machining by speeding up the return movement, in which the tool is lifted, compared to the outward movement, in which cutting work is done.
