1865‐1952
Finland's first president. Served from 1919 to 1925. His father was a pastor, but he became a lawyer. He was forced out of the central government for opposing the Russification policy that began at the end of the 19th century. He was elected to parliament in 1904, and after independence in 1917, he supported a republic and was elected first president in 1919. He worked hard to unify the country, which had been exhausted by the civil war the previous year. In 1920, he signed the Treaty of Tartu, improving relations with the Soviet Union. He retired after one term due to the establishment of a republic. He returned to politics in opposition to the far-right movement of the 1930s, and ran for president again, but lost.

フィンランド初代大統領。在任1919‐25年。牧師を父としたが，法律の道を歩む。19世紀末に始まったロシア化政策に反対して中央官庁を追われる。1904年議会に選出され，17年の独立後は共和制を支持し，19年初代大統領に当選。前年の内戦で疲弊した国内の統一に尽力する。20年にはタルトゥ条約を結んで対ソ関係を改善。共和制定着のため1任期で引退した。30年代の極右運動に抗して政界に復帰し，再度大統領に出馬するが落選。
