1865‐1952 Finland's first president. Served from 1919 to 1925. His father was a pastor, but he became a lawyer. He was forced out of the central government for opposing the Russification policy that began at the end of the 19th century. He was elected to parliament in 1904, and after independence in 1917, he supported a republic and was elected first president in 1919. He worked hard to unify the country, which had been exhausted by the civil war the previous year. In 1920, he signed the Treaty of Tartu, improving relations with the Soviet Union. He retired after one term due to the establishment of a republic. He returned to politics in opposition to the far-right movement of the 1930s, and ran for president again, but lost.
