...His "series integral" compositional method spread through the Darmstadt International Summer School of Contemporary Music, where Messiaen himself taught, and had a great influence on the new generation of composers in Europe, the United States, and Japan (musique seriale). Messiaen was interested in ornithology, transcribed bird songs from all over the world, and composed many pieces using those bird songs. Typical works include the orchestral piece "Réveil des oiseaux" (1953), "Oiseaux exotiques" (1956), and the piano piece "Catalogue d'oiseaux" (1958). His creative drive showed no signs of waning as he continued into the 1970s and 1980s, producing major works such as the orchestral work From the Canyons to the Stars (1974) and the opera Saint François d'Assisi (1983).
