Kabuki work. Three acts. Sewamono. First performed by Onoe Kikugoro V at the Tokyo Kabukiza in October 1902. Commonly known as Bunshichi Motoyui. San'yutei Encho's human interest story was adapted by Enokido Kenji. The gambling-loving but good-natured plasterer Chobei gives the money he received from selling his daughter Okiku to Yoshiwara to his assistant Bunshichi, who is about to commit suicide to make up for the theft of his master's money. Later, he finds out that the money he thought was stolen was actually left by a client, and Bunshichi's master takes Okiku back to repay his debt, asking her to marry Bunshichi. A masterpiece that depicts the subtleties of human feelings. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
