Pirro Ligorio

Japanese: リゴリオ(英語表記)Pirro Ligorio
Pirro Ligorio
Around 1513-83
Italian architect and ancient scholar of the late Renaissance. Born in Naples, he was active in Rome. He built the Villa d'Este, a villa for Ippolito d'Este, in Tivoli, on the eastern outskirts of Rome, and the Casino (pavilion) for Pope Pius IV in the gardens of the Vatican Palace. The former was a magnificent fountain terrace garden influenced by the ruins of Emperor Hadrian's Willa, which he himself excavated, while the latter was a small garden modeled after a pavilion from ancient Rome. Both were characterized by their erudite and pedantic decorativeness, rich in ancient iconography and allegory.
