Katsuyama (Ehime)

Katsuyama (Ehime)

...Population: 460,968 (1995). The central city area developed as a castle town in the early modern period when Kato Yoshiaki built his castle on the northern hill of Katsuyama (132m) and renamed the city Matsuyama. With the establishment of Ehime Prefecture (1873), Matsuyama became the prefectural capital, but before World War II the population was around 100,000 and the only industry was Iyo-kasuri, a specialty product.

From Matsuyama Plain

...An alluvial plain formed by the Shigenobu River and the Ishite River, it has an alluvial delta, and stretches from Yoshidahama in Matsuyama City to Iyo City with coastal sand dunes. The surrounding foothills are home to alluvial plateaus such as Harimazuka and Yatori River, and within the plain are isolated hills such as Katsuyama (Matsuyama, 132m), where Matsuyama Castle is located, Hoshigaoka, and Tenzan.
