[Birth] 1676 [Died] 1746 Swedish Siberianist and Orientalist. Also known as Tabbert. He served as an officer in the Northern War, but was defeated by the Russian army under Peter the Great at the Battle of Poltava and was sent to Siberia as a prisoner of war. He lived there for 13 years, taking advantage of the relatively free environment to explore various parts of Siberia, and returned to Sweden in 1722. He later wrote Das Nord-und Ostliche Theil von Europa und Asia (1730), which he published with maps. This became a groundbreaking work in the history, geography, and ethnology of Siberia.
