Various salts with _the _chemical formula xNa2O ･ yB2O3 are known (Table), but the best known are the tetraborate _Na2B4O7 and _the metaborate _NaBO2 . _The orthoborate _Na3BO3 ( x : y = ₃ : ₁ ) is not known.

The chemical formula _is _Na2B4O7 . The decahydrate _Na2B4O7 · _10H2O is commonly known as borax _and is _a white, translucent mineral found in the deserts of western North America and in the sediments _of brine lakes in the deserts of central Asia.
