Germiston - Germiston (English spelling)

A mining and industrial city in the southeastern part of Gauteng Province (formerly Transvaal Province) in the northeastern part of South Africa. It is located 16 km southeast of Johannesburg. It has a population of 186,423 (1990). Since the railway was opened from Cape Town in 1892, it has developed as a key railway transportation hub and is the country's largest railway connection point. It is also the center of the world's largest gold-producing region, producing about 700 million tons per year, accounting for about 70% of the world's gold production. There are more than 600 gold mines and railway-related companies, and it has developed into one of South Africa's leading industrial cities.
