Story (English)Storey, David
Born: July 13, 1933, Wakefield
[Died] March 26, 2017. London. British novelist and playwright. Full name: David Malcolm Storey. He depicted the loneliness and alienation of modern life by deconstructing the communicative and activating nature of language. At the age of 17, after completing compulsory education, he joined Leeds Rugby League Club and won a scholarship to an art school in London. Later, he found it difficult to balance rugby and art, so he returned three-quarters of his contract fee to the club and left the club. In 1960, he made his debut as a novelist with "This Sporting Life," a novel about the life of a professional rugby player. This work was made into a film titled "The Wages of Solitude" by director Lindsay Anderson in 1963. Other works include "Saville" (1976, Booker Prize), "A Prodigal Child" (1982), and "Thin-Ice Skater" (2004). As a playwright, his representative works include The Restoration of Arnold Middleton (1966), which depicts a teacher who suffers from severe neurosis; In Celebration (1969, made into a film in 1974) and The Contractor (1969), which depict the estrangement between parent and child; Home (1970), which consists of a dialogue between four elderly men and women in a setting that resembles a psychiatric hospital; The Changing Room (1971), set in the changing room of a semi-professional rugby team; and "The March on Russia" (1989).
