The Treaty of 1370 was signed in Stralsund (now Stralsund, Germany) between Denmark and 37 Hanseatic cities. It was signed during the absence of King Valdemar IV (reigned 1340-75), who aimed to reunify the country and expand into the Baltic Sea. It stipulated that Denmark would open the market of Scania to the Hanseatic League, and as a guarantee, the castles on the west coast of Scania would be placed under Hanseatic control for 15 years. It also required Denmark to seek the consent of the Hanseatic League when selecting the successor to the Danish throne. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
