On November 8 and 9, 1520, shortly after Christian II of Denmark became king of Sweden, mass executions of opponents of the Kalmar Union took place in the Great Square in front of Stockholm Castle. Denmark held real power in the Union, and under its rule, there was constant conflict between the Danish-backed Unionists and the opposition in Sweden, but the Danish king used force to suppress the opposition and ascended to the Swedish throne. Opponents were invited to the coronation on November 7, and the next day, with the king's permission, Archbishop Gustav Trolle, leader of the Unionists, opened an Inquisition on the grounds that the Church had been violated during the civil war, sentenced the accused to death on the spot, and began the executions, resulting in the execution of nearly 100 people, including two bishops, ministers, nobles, and citizens.
