A large river in northern Italy. It originates in the Monte Viso mountain range in the Alps, flows eastward and empties into the Adriatic Sea. It is the largest in Italy, with a total length of 680 km and a drainage area of 75,000 ^km2 . The upper reaches are rapid, but the middle and lower reaches are gentle. The alluvial plain below an altitude of 130 m from the middle to lower reaches is called the Po Plain, and is a rich agricultural region. It is also important as an inland waterway, and cities such as Turin, Milan, Pavia, Piacenza, Cremona, and Antova are located along the Po River and its tributaries. The upper reaches are used for power generation, and the middle and lower reaches are used for industry and irrigation. A vast delta has developed at the mouth of the river, with many branches. There have been many floods throughout history due to heavy rains in the fall and snowmelt in the spring.
