382 BCE? - 301 BCE Founder of the Antigonid dynasty of Macedonia. Reigned 306-301 BC. The origin of the title "Monophthalmos" (One-Eyed King) is unknown. Served as the infantry commander of the Corinthian League during Alexander the Great's eastern campaign. Appointed governor of Phrygia in Asia Minor. After Alexander's death, he participated in the reorganization of the empire with Antipater and others, took control of the eastern part of the empire, and, together with his son Demetrius I, extended his influence into Greece. From 315 BC, intermittent wars were fought between them and the allied forces of Cassander (Macedonia), Lysimachus (Thrace), Ptolemy I (Egypt), and Seleucus I (centered in Babylon), who were trying to divide and rule the empire. In 307 BC, they liberated Athens, the center of Greece, which had been under the control of Cassander, and the following year they defeated Ptolemy in a naval battle off the coast of Salamis on the island of Cyprus. With a renewed determination to rebuild the empire, father and son took the title of king. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
