Invention

...Seven children were born to the former and thirteen to the latter, about half of whom died in infancy, but five of the six boys who reached adulthood became musicians. From around 1720, Bach turned his attention to composing clavier music for the education of his sons and pupils, and for the family gatherings centered around his new wife. This resulted in the two- and three-part Inventions (BWV 772-801), the first volume of the Well-Tempered Clavier (BWV 846-869), and the French Suite (BWV 812-817). The most popular theory in recent years is that the English Suite (BWV 806-811) was composed around 1715 during the Weimar period.
