A samurai family from the Middle Ages and Early Modern Periods. They existed in Owari, Mikawa, Suruga, Izu, Kozuke, San'in, San'yo, and Kyushu, but the Maki clan of Owari and Suruga is particularly famous in history. (1) The Maki clan of Owari was a branch of the Shiba clan of the Seiwa Genji clan, and it is said that the descendants of Shiba Yoshimune took the name Maki. (2) The Maki clan of Suruga was a medieval samurai family from Ooka Maki in Suruga County (present-day Ooka, Numazu City, Shizuoka Prefecture). They originally took the surname Ooka. At the end of the Heian Period, Ooka Munechika served Taira Yorimori and ruled Ooka Maki. Among the Taira clan, Yorimori had a close relationship with the Minamoto clan, and perhaps because of this connection, Munechika became a vassal of the Kamakura clan, and Munechika's daughter (one theory says she was a sister) was taken as the second wife of Hojo Tokimasa.
