An earthquake struck the Tokai and Kinki regions on December 7, 1944. The epicenter was located off the coast of the Kii Peninsula at 136°12′ east longitude and 33°42′ north latitude, with a magnitude of 8.0, and caused a large tsunami of 8-10m in Owase and other areas along the Kumano-Nada coast. 998 people were killed, 3,059 people were injured, 26,130 houses were completely destroyed, and 46,950 houses were partially destroyed. Since it was during World War II, there have been no thorough investigations. There are nine historically recorded large earthquakes that are thought to have occurred in the area located on the east side of the Nankai Trough from the Kumano-Nada to the Enshu-Nada in the eastern part of the Kii Peninsula, including the Showa Tonankai Earthquake. However, the Showa Tonankai Earthquake was the only earthquake that occurred in this region alone, and the others were linked to the Tokai and Nankai earthquakes, and all of them are thought to have caused large tsunamis. The Earthquake Investigation Committee of the National Headquarters for Earthquake Research Promotion predicts that the probability of an earthquake occurring after 2010 is 60-70% within the next 30 years, and 90% within the next 50 years. There is also a possibility of a triple linked earthquake in the Tokai, Tonankai, and Nankai regions, with the largest predicted to be magnitude 8.7.
