Eastern Style Two-stringed Instrument - Azuma Ryunigenkin

Japanese: 東流二弦琴 - あずまりゅうにげんきん

A type of Japanese music and its instrument. It is a two-stringed instrument that was invented by Tosha Ashifune, and was an improvement on the "Yakumogoto" created by Nakayama Kotoshu, so that it could be played with Nagauta shamisen and its musical accompaniment. It is significantly different from the Yakumogoto in that it does not have a back plate, but there is no big difference in its function as an instrument and the way it is played. It became popular in Tokyo in the mid-Meiji period, but today there are only a very limited number of players.

日本音楽の一種目およびその楽器。中山琴主の創始した「八雲琴」を改良して，長唄三味線およびその囃子などとも合奏しうるようにした二弦楽器による音楽で，藤舎芦船 (とうしゃろせん) の創案による。八雲琴に比して裏板がない点が大きく異なるが，楽器としての機能や奏法には大差がない。明治中期に東京で普及したが，現在ではごく限られた演奏者を数えるのみとなっている。
