Stapler - stapler (English spelling)

Stapler - stapler (English spelling)

A tool that automatically staples papers together using a U-shaped metal needle. It is commonly called a stapler because it was invented by Benjamin Hotchkiss (1825-85), the inventor of the machine gun. It was first introduced to Japan from the United States in 1909 (Meiji 42), and began to be imported in large quantities in the early Taisho period. At the time it was called the "centipede type," and the first domestically produced one was made in 1918 (Taisho 7). There are various types depending on the purpose and needle size, but they can be broadly divided into No. 1 (a large type for thick paper), No. 3 (a medium-sized type with a thin needle that is a general type that can be used to staple papers neatly), No. 10 (the most popular type today, a small, portable type that can be operated with one hand), as well as electric and wire types, and the JIS standard applies to No. 3 and No. 10. Recently, they have been used not only as binding devices, but also as fasteners for packaging.
