Ashikaga Textiles - Ashikaga Orimono

A general term for textiles produced in Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture and its surrounding areas. Ashikaga silk and Ashikaga cotton have long been woven in this region as a side job for farmers, but in the Hoei era (1704-1711), takabata looms were introduced from Nishijin, which made it possible to weave saya silk, and a wide variety of textiles such as futsuu, donsu, and patterned shubsu were produced in competition with Kiryu. In 1888 (Meiji 21), jacquard looms were imported, and export silk fabrics were woven, but while Kiryu's signature product was obi fabric, Ashikaga's was meisen. Meisen is a type of silk fabric dyed before weaving, and includes striped, lattice, kasuri, and other patterned meisen, as well as hon-meisen. Thereafter, efforts were made to expand the range of fibers used, and silk-cotton blends, rayon blends, cotton fabrics, and woolen fabrics were mass-produced until just before World War II.

Currently, a wide range of items are produced for both domestic and export use, and the company has even expanded into areas such as lace.
