Born: April 18, 1819, Spalato, Dalmatia [Died] May 21, 1895, Vienna An Austrian operetta composer active in Vienna in the 19th century. He studied under Sechter and Seyfried in Vienna. From 1841 he worked as a theater conductor and composer at the Theater in der Wien, Theater an der Wien, Theater Baden, and Theater Leopoldstadt. His theater music, with its light Viennese style and gorgeous Italianate melodies, was a huge hit, and his operettas, including "The Queen of Spades," "The Light Cavalry," "Boccaccio," and "The Poet and the Peasant," and their overtures, are known worldwide.
