A French court dance from the early 16th century. Originating in Spain, it is a slow, lined dance performed with a dignified expression that imitates the grace of the peacock (pavo). The gentlemen and ladies bow to each other and dance forward and backward. It is in slow two beats (early there was also a three beat), and is often followed by a fast three beat gagliardo. From the late 16th century to the 17th century, the pavane and gagliardo as dances became less common, replaced by the passamezzo and saltarello, but as dance music they continued to be composed by the English virginal school.
