Kanto Travelogue

This is a record written by Shokai, a disciple of Eison of Saidaiji Temple in Nara, about his activities when he went down to Kamakura from February to August in 1262 (Kōchō 2). Prior to this, Kanazawa Sanetoki had sent Kena and Eison's disciple Joshun as messengers to encourage Eison to spread his teachings in the eastern provinces, and Eison agreed and went down to Kamakura. He gained the support of vassals such as Hojo Tokiyori and Sanetoki, and at the same time, his disciples Shohen, Ninshō, Raigen and others provided food for the poor people of Kamakura. Included in Saidaiji Eison Biography Collection (1956), edited by the Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties (now the Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties).
